I am Henry Finch by Viviane Schwarz and Alexis Deacon has just won the 2016 Little Rebels Award for radical children’s fiction.
Viviane’s book Is there a dog in this book? is also currently shortlisted for the Childrens Book Award 2016 – winners to be announced May 2016
Viviane’s book There are no cats in this bookwas shortlisted for the 2012 CILIP Kate Greenaway Award! “A book that perfectly expresses the power of the imagination! With an extraordinary sense of participation, this is book to play with as much as to read, and very much one to share. The illustrations are full of personality, the use of colour and blank space is brilliant. A book that works on lots of different levels.”
Viviane Schwarz was born in Germany and drew comics for a Children’s magazine there before moving to Cornwall to study illustration. She graduated in 2003 with an MA in authorial practice.
She has been successfully producing picture books since 2001, both as an author and illustrator, and her work has been shortlisted for a number of awards including the 2010 CILIP Kate Greenaway medal for There are cats in this book and again in 2012 for There are no cats in this book.
Viviane wants to engage readers with her books and hopes that they might sing along, shout out, laugh or act them out. As well as writing and illustrating her own books, she has also collaborated with Alexis Deacon on two titles, A Place to Call Home (2011) and Cheese Belings to You! (2013). A new departure for Viviane was her graphic novel for Walker Books called The Sleepwalkers for the 7+ age group and published earlier this year. Amongst her other titles as displayed, we currently have artwork available from her Children’s Book Award shortlisted Is there a dog in this book?
Viviane uses real materials, mostly brush-painted liquid watercolour and paper collage.
