Congratulations to Salvatore for winning the Independent Bookshop Week - Picture Book Award for A Walk in Paris, June 2015

Salvatore grew up in the heart of London and still loves the excitement of living in a big city. He's constantly inspired by city life, the endless cast of characters on the street, the changing architecture and by the thrill of not knowing what might be around the next corner.

He studied illustration at The Royal College of Art and in 2005 was short-listed for the Victoria and Albert Museum Illustration Awards for a series of paintings set in New York. This series was transformed into his first picture book, A Walk in New York, published to great acclaim. Salvatore was judged one of the country's top ten new illustrators in the Booktrust Best New Illustrators Award 2011. The final ten represent the best rising talent in the field of illustration who "demonstrate remarkable creative flair, artistic skill and boundless imagination in their work". His most recent book, Just Ducks!, was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal 2013. 2016 is a very busy year for Salvatore having illustrated three books -  Harry Miller's Run, written by David Almond, Our Very Own Dog and A Book of Feelings, both written by Amanda McCardie. All published by Walker Books Ltd.

Drawing and observation underpins the way he works and helps him to achieve a well-informed response to a project. He takes his sketchbook with him wherever he goes and has pages full of bumpy drawings made whilst on a train, pages stained by the rain when he's been caught out without an umbrella and other pages containing conversations that he's heard in passing and jotted down.

As well as working as an illustrator Salvatore teaches on the MA for Children's Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art and at Southampton Solent University where he teaches sequential narrative illustration.
